The principle
Parentheticals are best for brief information affecting how a line is understood, not miniature action paragraphs. “We see” and camera language are not forbidden. The practical objection is frequency and necessity: if the sentence works more directly, use the direct sentence. If a reveal depends on controlled point of view, write clearly.
Put it to work
- Move multi-character or extended business into action lines.
- Delete parentheticals that repeat the dialogue’s obvious emotion.
- Use camera language only when the shot concept is the cleanest way to communicate story information.
Common mistakes
- Assuming readers reject a script for one “we see.”
- Directing line readings throughout.
- Using format rebellion as a substitute for creative content.
